A warm welcome

Welcome to Countryside Animal Clinic

Our History

Dr. Kurt Krusen has run his general small animal practice since 1994. He currently provides a personalized approach and a more intimate experience in a slower paced, less stressful, beautiful country setting. He has special interests in surgery, geriatrics, and osteoarthritis where simple or comprehensive treatments including nutritional supplements can make a significant difference in the quality and length of your pet's life. He is involved in community events and has performed veterinary service/mission trips to Haiti, Cuba, Navajo Nation, Nicaragua, Grenada, and Costa Rica.

Our Philosophy

We provide compassionate, customized care in a quiet country setting making sure that our patients receive a high quality of veterinary care throughout the life of your pet. We understand your pet is part of your family, which is why we treat every animal as one of our own. We offer a range of veterinary services, grounded in solid medicine, which include routine preventative care for young, healthy pets; early detection and treatment of diseases for older pets; and complete medical and surgical care. Our team is also dedicated to client education. We offer a range of treatment options and clearly explain the differences to ensure you can make the best decision for you and your family. Our job is not only to treat your pet, but to help you learn how to keep your pet happy and healthy. We also can provide advice on behavioral issues. We believe that an individual approach is the key to the best care for your pet.

Our Services

A full range of care, grounded in solid medicine

From routine wellness visits to surgery and senior care — everything your pet needs across a lifetime, all in one quiet country setting.

Wellness (Vaccinations & Examinations)

Visits include a head to tail physical examination by our veterinarian. Based on your pet’s age and lifestyle, we will tailor a preventive care plan which includes vaccines, blood work, parasite preventatives, and nutritional counseling.

Surgeries

Dr. Krusen utilizes safe and effective anesthesia to offer your pet an array of surgical services and options including canine and feline spays and neuters, declaws, mass removals, and other elective surgeries. Dr. Krusen truly enjoys and has a special interest in surgery. Much of his 30 years in practice and continuing education has focused on general surgery.

Dentistry

Our dental services include ultrasonic scaling, extractions, and a two week long antibiotic in the gum pockets. Teeth cleanings are quite often needed during a pet’s life to prevent dental pain, infection, and tooth loss.

In-house Pharmacy

Our pharmacy comprises a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, shampoos, and flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives to meet the needs of your pet. We also can order prescription diets for those pets who require a special diet to manage many medical conditions.

Referral Services

We offer referrals to specialists for ultrasounds, endoscopic procedures, and diagnostic support of more complicated cases. We also offer referral services for complicated cases involving neurological disorders, dermatology, ophthalmology, radiography, etc.

Microchipping

For permanent identification of your pet, we offer Microfindr microchipping so you can be sure your pet can be returned safe and sound.

Small Animal Dietary Management

We offer nutritional guidance all the way through your pet’s life, including dietary requirements for growth, weight maintenance, and performance.

Heartworm & Flea/Tick Prevention

We comprise a program for the specific needs of your pet that fit your environmental situation. We will review with you the best ways to control fleas and ticks on your pet, as well as in your house and yard. We often see ineffectiveness and problems with over the counter and online products and are confident that we have the most effective products at a lower cost, that are guaranteed.

Geriatric Care

A companion animal is considered senior by the time they reach 9 or 10 years old, therefore we advise twice-a-year exams for our senior patients and annual bloodwork. Geriatric care is another special interest of Dr. Krusen and his staff. Adding supplements or medications and adjusting diet can enhance and lengthen your pet’s life.

Dermatology

We consistently see animals that have some form of a skin problem. We will identify and treat the cause of skin ailments, including allergies, parasites, or immune-related disorders.

Class IV Laser Therapy

Dr. Krusen and his staff utilize a Companion Therapy Laser unit for the treatment of pain and inflammation and skin, musculo-skeletal, and neurological issues. The laser’s infra-red light waves greatly reduce our patients’ inflammation and hasten healing. We often use Laser therapy as part of the majority of routine surgeries to decrease pain and speed recovery, as well as on arthritic joints and ligament sprains.

Tech Visits

Maintenance appointments can be scheduled for your animal, such as, nail trims, anal sac expressions, and ear cleanings.

Dog Training & Behavior

In-home behavior consultations are offered by Jen Gillis, CPDT-KA, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, for clients wanting assistance with behavioral difficulties. We can also provide advice on behavioral issues.

Our Team

The people caring for your pet

I’ve always tried to hire assistants who are positive, pleasant, and provide great customer and patient care. I feel we have a great team in place, and each one has their own strengths. I appreciate my staff greatly — they really enhance how enjoyable our clinic and my profession is. — Dr. Krusen

Kurt Krusen, DVM, Veterinarian & Owner at Countryside Animal Clinic

Kurt Krusen, DVM

Veterinarian & Owner

I have been a general small animal practitioner here in Central PA since graduating from Kansas State University in 1985. Originally from Kansas, I finished high school in Pennsylvania. My 30 years of practice are a great mix of valuable experiences. I worked with a solo practitioner for 7 years, started a housecall practice, worked at two emergency clinics, performed surgeries for several area clinics, and provided relief work for over 20 clinics in the area before starting my practice in 1994. I have also served on veterinary missions trips where I lecture, teach surgery, and perform elective surgeries in Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the Navajo Nation. I have a special interest in surgery, geriatrics, and arthritis, areas where I concentrate much of my continuing education.

It is over simplifying for me to say, “we will treat your pets as our own,” which is true. However, I treat the pet owner as if they were my Mom or Dad, which is with the care and respect that they are due. Working with people and helping to keep their pets happy and healthy is what I love about veterinary medicine.

Nancy Mack, Veterinary Reception & Technician at Countryside Animal Clinic

Nancy Mack

Veterinary Reception & Technician

Nancy has worked in the veterinary field since 1999 when she was hired to work part time by her veterinarian who was working hard to establish his own practice in Camp Hill. Who was the doctor? Dr. Kurt Krusen! Nancy was his first employee until 2003 when she moved to California. She returned to Pennsylvania in 2015, and when Dr. Krusen called to offer her a full time position in March 2018, she was thrilled to accept. A 1991 Messiah College graduate with a degree in Home Economics, Nancy self-published a book in 2013 about a very special kitty named Lagniappe. She owns one cat, enjoys reading, cross-stitching, and regularly wins ribbons at the Dillsburg Farmers Fair for her baking, cross-stitching, and gardening skills.

Nancy is one of the nicest persons you could ever meet. That’s why I hired her in 1999. 20+ years later, she’s just as personable, but now with years of vet reception and technician experience. — Dr. Krusen

Amanda Bonetti, Veterinary Assistant at Countryside Animal Clinic

Amanda Bonetti

Veterinary Assistant

Amanda was raised in Norwalk, CT and graduated in 2010 from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology. She started her veterinary career working as a receptionist and vet assistant at Banfield Pet Hospital in Bethesda, MD. For the last 6 years, she was working in shelter medicine, first for the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC, and then for HSWC in Hagerstown, MD. In 2018, she participated in HSUS’s Spayathon for Puerto Rico, assisting with spaying and neutering over 900 pets on the island — an experience that holds a special place in her heart, as she and her mother are Puerto Rican. Amanda loves assisting with surgeries and building relationships with clients. She lives in Mechanicsburg with her husband Matt and their cat, Honey Badger.

She brings 10 years of knowledge and experience, with a unique and useful background of corporate and shelter veterinary medicine, and a super upbeat and positive personality! — Dr. Krusen

Jen Gillis, Veterinary Assistant & Certified Dog Trainer at Countryside Animal Clinic

Jen Gillis, CPDT-KA

Veterinary Assistant & Certified Dog Trainer

A graduate of Penn State with a B.S. in Wildlife & Fisheries Science in 1993, Jen has worked as a Veterinary Assistant in several clinics in North Carolina and Central PA. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and has a strong interest in working with clients and dogs that have behavioral difficulties. Currently Jen offers individual in-home consultations for clients wanting assistance with behavior troubles. She enjoys spending time in outdoor activities with her husband, son, and daughter, and with her two dogs.

I am glad to have Jen to help us prevent and treat behavior issues. I try to schedule at least one puppy appointment when Jen is working so she can give some valuable training guidance. — Dr. Krusen

Jarah Spahr, Veterinary Technician at Countryside Animal Clinic

Jarah Spahr

Veterinary Technician

Jarah grew up on a small family farm in Lewisberry. Throughout high school she was active in Future Farmers of America and 4-H — she even showed dairy and market goats, angora rabbits, and alpacas through her 4-H program! Jarah started working in the veterinary field in kennels when she was 16, cleaning cages and feeding pets. Eventually she was trained as a Vet Tech, and has been serving as a Tech in general practice ever since. At home she has a menagerie of pets, including 4 dogs, 1 cat, 3 ferrets, multiple farm animals, and 2 fish tanks. Her hobbies include gardening, anything outdoors, and making hats or blankets.

She is extremely conscientious, never lets the ball drop, and is persistent with me until she gets the answers she needs so that she can provide great customer service. She has great tech skills and is always upbeat and easy to work with. — Dr. Krusen

Emily Dennis, Veterinary Assistant at Countryside Animal Clinic

Emily Dennis

Veterinary Assistant

A Boiling Springs native, Emily graduated from Bloomsburg University with a B.S. in Biology in 2011. As an undergraduate student, Emily worked several years as a Veterinary Assistant in Carlisle. Emily attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine for three semesters. Her vet school experience makes her a unique, dynamic, and integral part of our team, and she enjoys researching and helping Dr. Krusen on complicated cases. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her sons, Jarrett and Everett, and her husband Josh and their three cats. Emily is also an experienced equestrian, showing in local rated hunter–jumper shows.

This past summer Emily graduated as a Registered Nurse and is now working in Labor and Delivery at Harrisburg Hospital. We will miss seeing her smiling face every day, but she will be back periodically to perform dental cleanings (her favorite activity here) and see her favorite patients!
